First, how do you say it? CHOY-AH.
What is it? It's a variety of cactus.

There are several kinds of Chollas. The silver, the pencil, the chain food, the jumping, and the teddy bear. Some have beautiful blossoms and some do not. Many kinds of desert birds make their homes in Chollas because it has the most spikes and that makes the animals feel protected. Not many animals eat the cholla because it is spiny.

The shiny fuzzy cholla is commonly called jumping cholla because the spines will embed themselves in their victim at the slightest provocation and the segment will then break off and be carried to another location. The segments are able to take root and grow a new plant, so the plant can actually "jump" from one place to another.
